With Lonnie Felder

My name is Lonnie Felder I grew up in the Wynnefield section of West Philadelphia. I’ve been surrounded by several pioneers of Hiphop. Will Smith ,Schooly d and Dj Jazzy Jeff to name a few. My love for hiphop came in the late 70’s . I would listen to lady b on the radio. As she would spin classic Hiphop from Newyork City.In my younger years I was fortunate to be a Dj. Mainly I was a Dj in my neighborhood. I remember going to the record store buying up all the new Hiphop 12’ records that were hot at the time. In college I studied video productions and later I studied mental health. For 20 years I worked as a Mental Health Tech at temple university hospital. I currently hold an associate degree from Philadelphia University in Mental Health.I’m currently retired and I look forward to working and learning from everyone at the Hiphop Blvd. I’m honored to be asked to be part of wonderful organization. Thank you

DJ Statik Selektah

Statik Selektah is a hip-hop DJ, producer, and radio host from Boston, Massachusetts. His real name is Patrick Owen Baril, and he was born on January 23, 1982, in Lawrence, Massachusetts. He is best known for his smooth, sample-heavy production style that blends boom bap with soulful, jazzy elements.

By middle school, he was already DJing school functions, but his inspiration to become a professional DJ came after hearing DJ Premier and Funkmaster Flex on Hot 97 in New York City. Statik began doing radio at Phillips Exeter Academy, where he also occasionally DJed Afro-Latino Society parties, calling himself DJ Statik. The name “Selektah” was added later after he heard a local reggae artist say it unconsciously.

He went on to DJ clubs and private parties up and down the East Coast and has worked with legends such as Nas, Joey Bada$$, Action Bronson, Freddie Gibbs, Bun B, Styles P, and many more. He has released several solo production albums, often featuring a wide range of rappers. Statik has also hosted shows on Shade 45 (SiriusXM) and Boston’s Hot 97.7. His collaborations include work with Pro Era, Griselda, and many underground lyrical MCs. He is widely recognized for his crisp drums, soulful loops, and authentic hip-hop aesthetic that carry on the East Coast tradition.

Thank you, Statik Selektah, for all your contributions to the hip-hop community. They are deeply appreciated.

Dj A.K.A. Tricky D. has been into music since the early age of 11 and always had the magic of making people laugh and smile when they are around him. One of the things he like most is watching other DJs perform and their interactions with their crowd. He believes that being a true DJ is and has always been a true art of majesty because as such you are in control of most action that is conducted in your presence not by physical force but only by the use of vibrations that you send to your listeners mind and soul. He says when you play and control the body movement of hundreds or even thousands all at one time that is is true majestic power that you have found within oneself and the task of how to control and utilize it is set for true DJs. That is why he is conducting one on one’s with some of the great and upcoming DJs of yesteryear and upcoming DJs. Check in from time to time and see who’s the next one to be stopped on the DJ’s corner with DJ. A.K.A. Tricky D. right here on Hip Hop Blvd!!!

DJ TRICKY D

Afrika Bambaataa

I’m going to end the Hip Hop Blvd year off with the mentioning of someone we all will always pay homage to. Hip Hop is The Culture for what it is if it wasn’t for this individual… coming up in the streets of the South Bronx and many other areas would not have been as grateful for life if it wasn’t for this individual By this time if you are a real true Hip Hop head you should already know that I’m talking about the one and only Afrika Bambaataa…!!!

Afrika Bambaataa gave a path of new direction for the street life individuals who were later created as the Hip Hop culture. Rappers, Graffiti Artists, Break Dancers, Electric Boogie Dancers, DJs and many more who became part of the life we know as HIP HOP. Yes there were many others who contributed but we are recognizing one and that one is Bambaataa!!! If there is anything anywhere on this free planet called earth that is Hip Hop you better believe it is there because of this man here. We all know him for traveling far and abroad to take OUR Culture to them. Afrika Bambaataa… all Kingz & Qweenz of hip hop appreciate what you have done for the CULTURE!!!

Respect!!!
Peace and Be Well Ahkis..!!!

Dj Master O.C. & Dj Krazy Eddie

Peace and Blessings Hip Hop Blvd Family & Followers,

Let’s reminisce on another two DJ’s who help started Hip Hop with a group of MC’s that marked their place in the art.

Dj Master O.C. and Dj Krazy Eddie of the Fearless Four we say Thank you guys for your contribution to the art. Thanks for Rockin' It.... Rockin' It..!!!

Who remembers the battles that these guys performed against The CC4 in the Bronx and Harlem. Routine after routine was always coordinated well and we Il’ Schoolers always appreciated the shows. I would love to go back into time to see these shows but for now I’ll continue to listen to my tapes.

Peace, Be Well and Stay Safe…

Grand Master Flash

It was late 70’s when I was introduced to the sounds of GM Flash and I was already addicted to The Incredible Bongo Rock Band’s track Apache but when I heard GMF drop 20th Century Steel Band’s - Heaven and Hell intro before he played it… he took it to a whole new level. It was like the first remix to Apache. It put all crowds throughout the Bronx in a frenzy. Just knowing what was about to come on gave me chills then. His talent and skills can still be heard to this day and I don’t believe there isn’t anyone in Hip Hop that can say they never heard of him or play.

GRANDMASTER FLASH we say thank you for taking part in Creating this culture we live… HIP HOP!!!

DJ

Jazzy Joyce

Jazzy Joyce is definitely a name in the Hip Hop genre that has been heard of. Remembering “Its My Beat” featuring M.C. Sweet Tee. You can still hear Jazzy Joyce spinning and it is great to listen to her as she entertains the crowd. When you move the crowd you are complete as a Dj.

Joyce continue the craft as you do and Thank you… Spin On… Spin ON!!!

Peace and Blessings Hip Hop Blvd Family & Followers,

This week let’s talk about a trio of Hip Hop’s behind the scene disc jockeys... Now If you really remember the 70’s Hip Hop in the Bronx the group were called “The Mercedes Ladies”and they had three DJ’s…

Dj Baby D ( D. Myers ), Dj RD Smiley ( R. Pearson ) & Dj La Spank ( G. Hall… A.K.A. Dj FLAME ). These three were the first Female DJ’s of an all female hip hop group “Mercedes Ladies”. I remember doing a party with them personally once back in the day on Park Avenue ( Morrisinia Air Rights ) and it was a  great time. When you saw The Mercedes Ladies name on a flyer the women showed out for them. RD Smiley… Baby D… and Dj La Spank thank you for representing women of the real Hip Hop genre.

Peace Out Beloveds..!!!

DJ KOOL HERC

This week I’m talking about the God-Father of Hip Hop… The One and Only Dj Kool Herc.

Okay, I can’t speak of DJ’s in the Hip Hop genre without mentioning The God Father of Hip Hop himself “Kool Herc”. It’s like talking about …….. . Kool Herc has flashed the light of Hip Hop life for us to follow by creating the foundation to the gatherings to party. Known as the group to have the loudest system as Kool Herc and The Hercoloids. If you ever get a chance to listen to this Legend as a new man or woman into this craft I suggest you take that opportunity because Kool Herc always had a way of pulling cuts out of his crates that would keep you enjoying music no matter the culture.

Kool Herc…. We thank you for what you’ve done for Hip Hop lovers and what you still do!!!

Peace and Blessings Hip Hop Blvd Family & Followers,

This week I'm mentioning the talents of another Hip Hop Pioneer… I’m talking about The Treacherous 3’s very own Dj Easy Lee.

Dj Easy Lee was behind the set for his team in Harlemworld during that infamous battle between The Chief Rocker Busy Bee and Kool Moe Dee. We all know who took the trophy home

FUNKY FOUR + 1

These brothers were the ones behind tracks such as Do You Wanna Rock, That’s The Joint and the classic of them all… “Rappin’ and Rockin’ The House…!!! The Funky 4+1 was the first rap group to play Primetime TV on Saturday Night Live back when Eddie Murphy was part of the cast and you saw that episode you would recall that Dj Breakout was the Dj during that performance. Salute to another duo of DJ’s that help create the genre.

DJ’s of The Legendary Cold Crush 4 ( Brothers )

about Dj Charlie Chase and Toney Tone

I remember watching These guys in the T-Connection one time and it was great to watch them creating the loop for Grandmaster Caz, Easy A.D., Jerry Dee Lewis & Almighty Kay Gee to harmonize their rhyming skills ( what we called rappin’ back then ) over. Check out Fresh, Fly, Wild and Bold by the Cold Crush Brothers when you get a chance. The two appeared to have had great chemistry as a team because they were it for a very long time. You can catch these guys in the movie called Wild Style battling it out on the basketball Court against Grand Wizard Theodore & The Fantastic 5 MC’s. https://youtu.be/yddfvHmr9Os

This week we are recognizing the first female Dj of Hip Hop… DJ Wanda Dee of Harlem USA and the Boogie Down Bronx...!!!

Seeing Wanda and her microphone conductor MC Debbie Dee was always a pleasure to see rock house and I think the Hip Hop nation family really showed out when these two were on the flyers of many places like the T-Connection and Harlemworld. Wanda Dee was introduced to us through one of Hip Hops highest and very well respected icons who I will mention in an upcoming article ( but that's just to get you to come back... ). She was also in the movie “BeatStreet if you remember. Wanda moved on to other successful ventures and is still with us to this day.

Dj Disco King Mario

Disco King Mario was another Dj from the Bronx who show us the way of building a sound system to perform with out in the streets and parks of the Bronx, Ny. Coming from the streets when things were rather tough Mario came to surface just as some others did but with a style. He too was a Dj in the 70’s in the city like some others but took it to the streets with pizazz. I remember seeing the two Street Signal lights 🚦on top of his speakers one on the left with the other on the right and they were running too! I know many have plenty of stories of those who I will be acknowledging but remember... it’s all about were we came from and what we represent. Hip Hop Music

Peace until next time.

 Pete Dj Jones

Peace and Blessings Hip Hop Blvd Family & Followers,
This month being the first of our journey to recognize Da DJ’s ( Disc Jockey’s ) we will start off with PETE “DJ” JONES...

A true pioneer who founded our skill of the DJ from the beginning of our spin genre. Pete “DJ” Jones originally from North Carolina was an icon from the early 70’s putting together two turntables and a mixer together with some speakers along with an amp. Pete “DJ” Jones was known as one of the first DJ’s to keep a certain part ( breakbeat, break or get down portion ) of a record playing continuously by the use of the two turntables and mixer extending it so listeners can feel the groove even more electrifying than the record itself. We know called this “Cutting”. Even though his name wasn’t as known as some important names who later came on in the field Pete “DJ” was still known in the adult disco club scene in NYC to most if not all those who spun wax or vinyl in the 70’s era. Pete “DJ” Jones continued his passion for music until his passing in January 2014.

Rest In Peace Pete "DJ" Jones...
